Surveyor General's office.
26th August 1885,
In reply to your letter of the 11th instant.
I have to express my deep regret with reference to the Governor's act in officially printing strictures upon me without previous consultation - by letting me see the document, that I am still unable to conjecture any motive for this act other than the one I assign.
I was compelled to forward my appeal to the Secretary of State.
This conviction as to the motive is the more painfully forced upon me by the undeserved and deeply humiliating treatment which I unhappily received.
The Hon. Frederick Stewart
Acting Colonial Secretary
